GOD’S MATH

Last weekend, I gave a talk to Camp Calle, our version of a youth camp. And somehow it transported me back to my youth ministry days. A time when we had full dreams and nearly-empty wallets. When we were willing to hold an event in the cheapest venue so that our proposal would be approved by our elders. A time when having a chicken or hotdog sandwich for the event snacks was a luxury compared to the packed biscuits and tetra pack drinks that we would usually serve.

All these thoughts make me ask my younger self, β€œDid we make it?”
33 summers multiplied by at least a hundred should give us 3,300 young people. Well, most of them would be adults now, but it means 3,300 people added to the flock. But where are they now?

I do not have a tracker, and if not for Facebook, I would never know where they are now.

But in this time of reminiscing and feeling sorry for myself, I hear God gently whisper, β€œStop obsessing with the numbers, the good shepherd leaves the 99 to look for the one missing. And when the sheep is found, he carries him on his shoulders, rejoicing. You, my son, have brought back more than one. And that is more than enough.”

Many times, we try to do our own math, setting our parameters for success, only to realize that is not what God is measuring. God measures faithfulness, and faithfulness leads to fruitfulness.

So even if you do not see the fruits, remain faithful.
