We had our Christmas party with the servants of Wednesday Feast Alabang last week. Our final activity was the exchange gift, where we played the White Elephant. Each player brings a wrapped gift in front and draws a number for turn order. The first player selects a gift from the central pile and opens it in front of everyone. The subsequent players can either choose a new gift from the central pile or steal an unwrapped gift from other players. A gift can only be stolen up to three times. Once everyoneβs turn is done, the first player gets the last chance to swap, ending the game until everyone is content.
We had great fun while exchanging gifts. Everyone was thrilled in excitement as gifts were swapped here and there. In the midst of the fun and excitement, I paused and reflected on how that simple activity taught me several things.
First is letting go. Nothing is ours to begin with and everything is temporary. But rest assured that whatever is taken away from us will be replaced by God with something better. Sometimes, itβs not what we wanted, but itβs what we needed.
The game also taught my heart to be more contented and not compare what I have with others because envy is a poison. It steals away our joy.
Lastly, God knows the deepest desires of our hearts. We may not get it instantly, but He will surely give it in His own way and in His own time.
