A few nights ago, I was watching Slam Dunk, the movie. There was a scene where a player by the name of Sawakita was praying. He is a very good player, and because of him, their team was undefeated.

One night, he was praying and said, β€œI have done everything in high school basketball and have nothing more to prove. Please give me the experience I need.”

The next game, they lost.

When their team was in the locker room doing their huddle, that’s when he started crying and explained to his teammates what happened. That he prayed for an experience that he needed, and he believes that it was the reason why they lost. And because of that, he trained harder and eventually ended up playing collegiate basketball in the US.

Sometimes God allows us to lose to give us that healthy sense of dread, that not everything will be perfect. Sometimes the losing experience is the experience you need that will push you to move.

A few months ago, our house was devastated by a flood, and that experience pushed us to move with our plans to elevate the house, which requires major house renovation. We are still in the process of filing all the necessary documents to avail of a housing loan, but without that bad experience, Lyra and I might have remained complacent with our plans.

So when things are not going according to plan, remember that sometimes, losing is the winning experience.
