During our last Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement, I found out I was overweight. Hindi halata — but numbers don’t lie. So, rightly or wrongly, I decided to try a “strategy”: skip lunch. I’d eat breakfast, skip lunch, and eat dinner.
(Warning: This is a narrative on a failing strategy. The diet itself is not scientific.)
Just recently, after visiting a school where I handle ROTC, my officemates gathered around the canteen near our office. It was almost 11 a.m., and the lunch dishes were already being placed on the display rack. By 11:15, people started coming in for their early lunch. I watched what they ordered. Nainggit. Natakam. I ended up ordering too — not much: one ulam (with wiggly bits of pork fat), two rice, and a Coke lang naman.
I was in the wrong place for my goal. Honestly, I’ve learned this lesson before in different ways:
If I want success, I need to be with the right people — and to avoid, not resist, temptation.
The truth is, the group I was with were all people who regularly eat lunch. And as if that’s not enough, I followed them to the very place they eat lunch!
That simple moment made me realize — this is not just about diet. It’s about life. If we keep staying in places where temptation thrives, we shouldn’t be surprised when we fall. Avoidance is often wiser than resistance. Sa Bible, ang utos sa atin ay “flee” from temptation… Fleeing is the strategy.
Sometimes, the key to discipline isn’t about having stronger willpower — it’s about being in the right company and the right place.
Want to grow spiritually? be in the right place like the Mass, the feast or a Light Group.
