My son and I had a special prayer time before bed last night.
Our routine is simple. We each tell God:
• What we’re thankful for
• What we’re sorry about
• What we’re praying for
While praying, my 9-year-old said:
“Lord, I’m sorry for my sins. Please forgive me. I’m sorry to Mommy and Daddy because I’m kulit most of the time. I’m sorry to my friends if I hurt them… and I’m sorry to myself.”
I immediately stopped him and said, “Don’t say that. You don’t need to say sorry to yourself.”
But he replied, “Hayaan mo lang ako, Mommy. I want to say sorry to myself.”
So I asked him why.
He said, “Because sometimes I hurt myself by not being careful. And sometimes life is hard for me.”
I honestly laughed at first because I didn’t expect to hear that from a 9-year-old.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized he was right.
We say sorry to God. We say sorry to the people we’ve hurt. But sometimes we forget ourselves.
Sometimes we make choices that hurt us. Sometimes we don’t take care of ourselves the way we should. Sometimes we carry guilt, disappointments, and mistakes without giving ourselves grace.
Maybe it’s okay to say, “I’m sorry to myself.”
And maybe it’s also okay to forgive ourselves.
Because healing starts when we show ourselves the same kindness we give to others.
That little prayer from my son became a reminder I didn’t know I needed. ![]()
