By Dean Sebastian
While waiting in the car one afternoon, I was watching a reel about what happened to the 12 apostles after Jesus’ resurrection.
My daughter Soleil, who was with me (her mom was inside the market), got curious and leaned in to watch with me. Afterward, she asked me to send the video to her mom “so that she could watch it too”.
That night, Soleil asked me, “Daddy, what’s the difference between apostles and disciples?”
I explained as simply as I could: the apostles were the Twelve chosen by Jesus, but disciples are anyone who knows Him, follows Him, and shares Him with others. That means the Twelve were disciples, and so are we— her mom, her brothers, herself, and me.
Later, I caught Soleil reading Bible stories to her little brother Sabino. Then, in her usual kakulitan, she made sure her mom watched the video.
“Send it to your friends”, she said after her mom watched.
I often tell my light group that my family is my ministry. It’s not my only ministry, but it’s my first and most important one.
That night, after watching Soleil read Bible stories and encourage her mom to share what she learned, I realized something deeper: My family isn’t just where I serve; it’s where I’m called to raise disciples. I’m not just here to take care of my wife and kids—I’m here to help them grow in faith so they can share Jesus with others, too.
Perhaps this is how discipleship truly grows: one curious question, one shared video, one Bible story at a time, in the quiet, ordinary moments of family life.
