DEAR DIARY

Recently, I had a heart-to-heart talk with one of my best friends from college. We’ve been friends for more than a decade now, but there was a time when we didn’t understand each other. When we talked about it, we realized our misunderstanding came from two different perspectives.

She wanted to be supported through presence, someone beside her during a difficult time. I, on the other hand, thought that since I couldn’t always be there, I should give her a diary where she could write her feelings and frustrations. Writing and art helped me before, and I thought it would help her too. I didn’t realize then that I hurt her by doing the opposite of what she needed. I apologized, and she smiled and said she understood where I was coming from. It took time, but we met in the middle.

This reminded me of the story of Job and his friends in the Bible. When Job was suffering, his friends first sat with him in silence. They were present. Later, they started giving advice and explanations, thinking they were helping, but they only made him feel more misunderstood.
Sometimes we are like Job’s friends. We love people, but we love them the way we know how, not the way they need.

Jesus loves differently. He meets us where we are, not where He wishes we were.
Love is not about having the right answers. It is about staying, listening, and understanding. The same way God patiently loves us.
