I am a mediocre chess player who likes to believe I have “superior” chess-playing ability. Then I met this co-worker who actually plays chess competitively—someone who represents against truly strong players. Kung junior league ako, senior league siya. The skill gap is obvious.
I’ve played with him many times, and not once have I won. Talo talaga. But here’s the beautiful part: he is generous enough to play with someone like me—an inferior being in the chess universe. And because of that generosity, my game improved. Talo pa rin, pero at least may growth.
From this simple experience, I realized two things about our spiritual journey:
1. May mga taong mas spiritually mature kaysa sa atin. And that’s not a bad thing. We grow when we walk with people who are ahead of us—people whose lives reflect humility, patience, discipline, faithfulness. In my case, sa Light Group ko, I have kuyas and brothers whose maturity in faith helps me grow.
2. If you are the more mature person in the relationship, be generous. Someone weaker, someone struggling, someone younger in the faith—may be looking at you for guidance.
Your kindness, your time, your willingness to walk with them may be the very thing that lifts them closer to Jesus.
Just like how my co-worker took time to play with me, maybe you’re also in a position to help someone in their spiritual journey. Keep being loving.
And this is exactly what Jesus commands us to do:
“A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:34–35
In chess and in faith, we grow because someone ahead of us loves us enough to walk with us.
