BEAUTY FROM ASHES

This Lenten season is a season of gift exchange.

No, it’s not yet Christmas season, and, yes, God desires gift exchange even during lent.

The words β€œbeauty from ashes” came from the book of Isaiah, where God promised to do something about our deep sorrow, our ashes, our mortal and sinful state.

Repentance is a place where this gift exchange begins.

Friend: stop running and surrender your brokenness to the Lord.

Yes, God wants you to let go of your brokenness so He could bring new and beautiful beginning.

I was reminded of an old Japanese pottery repair method, Kintsugi.

Kintsugi was accidental. A Japanese commander-in-chief broke his favorite tea bowl. He commissioned a repairman who glued the broken pieces using lacquer and powdered gold. The process transformed the bowl into something more precious and beautiful. A beautiful artwork was born out of failure and regret.

Kintsugi honors the broken item by emphasizing, not hiding, its brokenness.

Similarly, your cracks give you character. Don’t be embarrassed by your missteps and failures.

This Lenten season, treat your imperfections as gifts to be worked with, not shames to be hidden. You can start the process in the beautiful sacrament of confession.

And in time, you will witness beauty coming out of the ashes.
