BARABBAS IS ME

Ever since I was a kid, every time I watched “The Passion of the Christ”, I felt this strong sense of anger. I couldn’t understand why Barabbas the thief, the murderer, and the sinner was the one set free instead of Jesus. It just didn’t feel right. Why would people choose someone guilty over someone innocent?

That question stayed with me for a long time. So I decided to learn more about Barabbas. And what I found really hit me:

Barabbas is us. Barabbas is you. Barabbas is me.

At first, it felt shocking but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.
Barabbas wasn’t set free because he deserved it. He wasn’t innocent. He didn’t earn a second chance. He was guilty. And still, he walked free… while Jesus, who did nothing wrong, took his place.

And honestly, that’s my story too. I’m not perfect. I make mistakes. I am a sinner. And yet, I’m the one who gets another chance not because I earned it, but because Jesus carried the cross for me.

Then I learned that “Barabbas” actually means “son of the father.” That made me pause. Because I, too, am a child of the Father, and Jesus, also the son of the Father took the punishment meant for me.

Nothing in that was accidental. It revealed God’s plan to save sinners like me.

Now, I don’t feel anger anymore.

I feel humbled.

Because Barabbas is me.
