Last week, I attended a wedding, and one of the things that really stuck with me was when the priest said, “Love is a contradiction, it is ordinary yet sacred.” As I heard those words, it made me reflect on Valentine’s Day and how everyone does their best to make their loved ones feel that they are very special that day. From the flowers, the fancy dinner of steak and wine, those really expensive gifts that we save up for just to give them on the 14th of Feb., all of these makes Valentines day special.
But as I also reflect on what Fr. Hansel said in his homily. It is ordinary yet sacred that allowed me to see the beauty of the ordinary things a couple does for each other. It is in the preparation of breakfast, the washing of the dishes, and doing the chores you are not scheduled to do, because your spouse is not feeling well. These are ordinary things that bring out the sacredness of marriage.
Love is a contradiction; it is both extravagant and simple. It is in the flowers, the expensive gifts, the fancy dinner, and the out-of-town trips. But it is also in the small things, like the chores at home.
So go ahead, buy those flowers, go out for dinner, do what ever It takes to make this day special, but please remember to also do the small things that makes everyday special.
