I studied grade school at the Philippine Embassy School in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
One day, we had a substitute teacher in Arabic class. After a few minutes of teaching, we noticed that he was no longer teaching the language – but started teaching the Quran (The Book of the Muslims).
The class was composed of diverse students. Half of us are Filipinos, while the others are of different nationalities. Some of us are Catholics, others are Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hindus, Muslims, etc. We respected each other’s differences, so the class was getting uncomfortable.
To make matters worse, the teacher started attacking the Catholic religion. We started looking at each other. This was when Riyadh was so strict against other religions. How do we deal with this?
A brave student stood up and directly corrected the teacher’s statement against our church. Another student stood up, reminding him that he should be teaching the language only. Another student stood up in protest. Then I did. Soon, all the Catholics were standing.
The teacher was so shocked that left the class.
I felt like a soldier of God. But my life’s regret was that I was not the first student who stood up. He had full Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). He understood our faith, led us all into battle, and won. This was my wake-up call to be alert of my faith: to further listen, understand, believe, and pray – ready for the next fight.
