Lately, while going through my stuff, I found a book me and my wife bought during the Lux Retreat (shameless plug: there’s another one this September). It was by Bro. Arun Gogna.
I was already deep into the second chapter when what I was reading suddenly didn’t make sense. I went back, confused, and decided to read from the top. This time, I read the title. And there it was—clarity. I didn’t need to reread everything; I just needed the title. Suddenly, the past paragraphs made sense, and I could sense where Bro. Arun was taking me. Having read his works before, I was familiar with his style.
As usual, napatawa na naman ako sa realization ko.
I’ve long been conscious of my bad habit of skipping titles and headlines. In presentation slides, I get lost in the details until I force myself to read the headline. In articles or books, I often skip the title and jump straight into the lines—until I get confused and remind myself: Go back. Read the title.
In life, madalas ganito tayo. We go straight to the lines, working our way through, only to find ourselves confused in the middle because we didn’t read the title first.
Reading the title prepares our mind and heart for what’s ahead. It gives context to the story, even while we’re in the messy middle.
Right now, I’m in that messy middle. Having special children (plural) in the family sometimes doesn’t make sense if I don’t know the title of our story.
God is Sovereign.
That’s the title I choose for our story—for my story. Because of this, everything becomes an act of surrender. Now it makes sense.
And knowing the Author helps, too. God is the Author of my story and knowing Him helps me make sense of things because I’ve become familiar with His styles and patterns.
